Herb Drying & Medicinal Oil Making: Calendula and Rosemary for Skin and Scalp Care

  • Fig Leaf Gardens 4046 39th Avenue Oakland, CA, 94619 United States (map)

Herbs are vital to garden ecosystems because they play an essential role in supporting the health of the garden as a whole. In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore how herbs contribute to soil health, help to break down compost, attract pollinators and beneficial insects, and strengthen edible crops through companion planting. We’ll also highlight the role of herbs in permaculture practices such as fruit tree guilds. Additionally, we’ll explore the virtues of herbs as deeply rooted allies for the garden’s human tenders—offering sensory and therapeutic benefits, cultural and ancestral connection, and everyday health and wellness. Together, we’ll plant herb starts grown by Fig Leaf Gardens, sow our own herb seeds to take home, and learn about simple herbal preparations that bring the garden’s abundance into our kitchens and apothecaries. This workshop is a celebration of the myriad virtues of herbs, and will set the stage for our herbalism journey from seed to medicine.
